Camille is a little Tibetan spaniel with huge, piercing, brown eyes. He was someone’s pet for the first few years of his life.
We will never know how, in the scorching heat of August 2015, he came to be travelling on a truck on the Beijing Highway, packed tightly in a cage with strays and other stolen pets.
What we do know is that NoToDogMeat’s founder, Julia de Cadenet, and a team of Chinese activists were able to save Camille and help to provide the medical care he and the 140 dogs with him so desperately needed.
Julia de Cadenet:
“The friendships that we formed caring for little Camille, who had distemper, and other dogs like him, cemented our decision to open a partner shelter in China and care for as many rescued cats and dogs as we could until we could find them loving homes.
“We now have more than 750 dogs and cats in the large Hebei shelter and a few hundred at our Beijing base, most of whom were rescued during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We continue to work closely with activists in China, intercepting trucks carrying animals destined for the dog meat trade and conducting raids on slaughterhouses. We do all we can to support volunteers by providing food and medical supplies for the rescued animals.
“Together we can bring about change.”
